How to compress photos and videos on iPhone

Short answer
Switch the camera to Settings → Camera → Formats → High Efficiency to record in HEIF and HEVC, which roughly halves the size of everything you shoot from that point on. For photos already in your library, a compression tool re-encodes them into the same formats — iPhone Cleaner does this on the device at three quality levels, keeping dates and location intact.
Compressing instead of deleting
Every storage guide tells you to delete things. Compression is the alternative for everything you actually want to keep.
Modern codecs store the same picture in a much smaller file by describing it more efficiently — not by throwing away detail you can see. A photo re-encoded from JPEG to HEIF at high quality is around half the size and visually identical on a phone screen.
The trade-off is real but modest: it is a lossy re-encode, so at aggressive settings you will see softness if you zoom in or print. At conservative settings you will not.
What HEIF and HEVC are
Two names for the same idea, one for stills and one for video.
- HEIF (
.heic) replaces JPEG for photos. Roughly half the file size at equivalent quality, with support for transparency, depth data and Live Photos. - HEVC (H.265) replaces H.264 for video. Roughly half the file size at the same resolution and frame rate.
Both are supported on every iPhone that runs a current version of iOS, and on Macs, iPads and recent Windows and Android devices. When you share a HEIF photo to something that cannot read it, iOS converts it to JPEG automatically — so compatibility is rarely the problem people expect.
Change the camera settings first
This is the highest-value step and it takes ten seconds, because it applies to everything you shoot from now on.
Settings → Camera → Formats → High Efficiency.
The alternative, Most Compatible, records JPEG and H.264 — larger files, for compatibility that most people no longer need.
While you are there, Settings → Camera → Record Video sets the resolution and frame rate. Roughly, per minute of footage:

4K at 60 fps costs about seven times what 1080p at 30 fps costs. For everyday recording that is a lot to pay for footage that will mostly be watched on a phone.
Compressing photos already in your library
iOS has no built-in way to re-encode photos you have already taken. The camera setting only affects new ones.
iPhone Cleaner handles the existing library, converting photos to HEIF and videos to HEVC on the device. Three levels:
- High Quality — visually indistinguishable on a phone screen. The safe default for photos you care about.
- Balanced — a noticeably larger saving, with no visible difference in normal viewing.
- Max Savings — the largest saving. Use it for screen recordings and clips you keep for reference rather than for photographs.
Dates, location and other metadata are preserved at every level, so your library stays sorted and your Memories keep working.
One caveat worth knowing: the original is replaced by the smaller file. It goes to Recently Deleted as part of that, so you have the usual 30 days — but if a particular photo matters enough that you would want the original back later, export a copy before compressing it.
What is worth compressing, and what is not
Compression pays off in proportion to file size, so sort by size and start at the top.
Strong candidates:
- Screen recordings. Large, and quality barely matters. Max Savings.
- Long 4K videos. The biggest single wins available.
- Old JPEG photos imported from a camera or another phone, which were never HEIF.
Leave alone:
- Photos already in HEIF. Re-encoding an efficient format into itself loses quality for almost no saving.
- Screenshots. Small already, and mostly better deleted than compressed.
- Anything you might print or edit properly later.
Compression and iCloud Photos
If iCloud Photos is on, compressed versions sync back and replace the originals everywhere. That frees iCloud storage as well as space on the phone.
Two practical notes: photos stored as optimised versions have to download in full before they can be re-encoded, so do a large compression run on Wi-Fi; and because the sync applies everywhere, the change reaches your other devices too.
If you specifically want full-resolution originals kept in iCloud and small versions on the phone, you do not want compression at all — you want Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos → Optimise iPhone Storage, which is a different mechanism with no quality loss.
