How to merge duplicate contacts in iCloud

· 6 min read

Short answer

iCloud.com does not have a merge-duplicates feature, which is why searching for one is frustrating. The bulk route is the Contacts app on a Mac signed in to the same Apple Account: Card → Look for Duplicates finds them and merges in one pass, and the result syncs to iCloud and every device. Without a Mac, merge on the iPhone instead — the changes land in iCloud either way.

Why you cannot find the button on iCloud.com

Because it is not there. iCloud.com's Contacts app lets you view, edit, add and delete, and it lets you export a vCard — but it has never offered duplicate detection or merging.

This trips people up because iCloud is where the contacts live, so it feels like the place the job should be done. The storage and the tooling are simply in different places: iCloud holds the records, and the Contacts apps on Mac and iPhone are what edit them.

Anything you merge on either device syncs straight back to iCloud, so the outcome is identical. You are only choosing which tool does the work.

The bulk route: Contacts on a Mac

If you have access to any Mac signed in to the same Apple Account, this is by far the fastest option and the only genuine bulk merge Apple provides.

  1. Open Contacts on the Mac.
  2. Confirm it is showing your iCloud account, not On My Mac — the sidebar names the account.
  3. Choose Card → Look for Duplicates from the menu bar.
  4. Contacts reports how many duplicated cards it found. Click Merge.

It merges the matching cards, keeping the union of their details rather than discarding one side, and the change propagates to iCloud and every signed-in device within moments.

Two things worth knowing before you click Merge. It matches conservatively, so it will not catch the same number saved with and without a country code. And there is no per-card review — it is one decision for the whole set, which is exactly why the backup in the next section matters.

Export a vCard first — it takes ten seconds

A merge is difficult to unpick afterwards, and Apple offers no undo once the sync has gone out. Export before you start.

  1. Sign in at iCloud.com and open Contacts.
  2. Select all contacts, then use the settings menu to Export vCard.
  3. Keep the .vcf file somewhere off the phone.

One limitation to be aware of: a vCard export does not reliably carry contact photos, so a restore from one can come back without them. It preserves names, numbers, emails and addresses, which is the part that matters if a merge goes wrong.

Without a Mac: merge on the iPhone

Recent iOS versions surface duplicates directly in the Contacts app. Open Contacts and look just under the search field for a Duplicates Found banner. Tapping it lists the sets and offers Merge All, or lets you work through them one at a time.

If no banner appears, iOS either found nothing it is confident about or has not finished analysing — the check runs in the background rather than on demand.

You can also link two cards manually: open one, tap Edit, scroll down, choose Link Contacts, and pick the other. Linked cards display as one person while both underlying records stay intact, which makes it the reversible option.

The full step-by-step, including the cases iOS misses, is in how to merge duplicate contacts on iPhone.

Stop them coming back

Merging is only permanent if the thing creating duplicates has stopped. If two accounts are both syncing the same people, the duplicates return.

Open Settings → Contacts → Accounts and check whether Contacts is switched on for more than one account. Decide which one owns your contacts and turn the others off.

Why you have duplicate contacts covers the causes in more detail, including the ones that are not account-related.

Frequently asked questions

Can I merge duplicate contacts on iCloud.com?

No. iCloud.com's Contacts app can view, edit, delete and export, but it has no merge-duplicates feature. Use the Contacts app on a Mac, or merge on the iPhone — either way the result syncs back to iCloud.

How do I find duplicates in iCloud contacts?

On a Mac, open Contacts and choose Card then Look for Duplicates. On an iPhone, open the Contacts app and look for the Duplicates Found banner beneath the search field.

Does merging contacts on my Mac change them in iCloud?

Yes, as long as the Contacts app is showing your iCloud account rather than On My Mac. The merge syncs to iCloud and to every device signed in to the same Apple Account.

Can I undo a contact merge?

Not once it has synced. Export a vCard from iCloud.com before you start. Note that vCard exports do not reliably preserve contact photos.
